Which board goes where
Plasterboard types by room and wall, without the brand names
Every Perth plasterboard page lists standard, wet, fire, acoustic and impact as a menu. What a builder needs is the map from the room to the sheet. This is it. The brand on the sheet is whatever your spec and the tested system call for.
| Where it goes | Sheet | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom, living and hallway walls | Standard 10mm | The workhorse sheet. 13mm where the spec or the wall height calls for a stiffer board. |
| Ceilings | 10mm ceiling board or 13mm | Ceiling sheets are made to span the batten or joist spacing without sagging. Long sheets cut the joints. |
| Bathroom, laundry, kitchen splash zones | Wet area (moisture-resistant) | A water-resistant core and liner for rooms that get steam and splashes. Where the tiled zone starts, the spec may switch to fibre cement. |
| Party walls between dwellings, corridors, garage-to-house walls where the certifier requires it | Fire-rated, as part of a tested system | The NCC requires fire separation between dwellings that share a wall, and the certifier sets which other walls carry a rating. The rating belongs to the whole system, not the sheet. |
| Home theatre, office partitions, bedrooms against a busy room | Acoustic (sound-rated) | A denser core that, with the right stud and insulation, lifts the wall's sound rating. |
| School and retail corridors, plant rooms, high-traffic commercial | Impact-resistant | A reinforced sheet that takes trolleys, bags and boots without patching every month. |
| Curved bulkheads and feature walls | Flexible 6.5mm | A thin sheet that bends to a radius. Doubled up for strength. |
| Lift shafts and services risers | Shaftliner | Installed from one side where the other side cannot be reached. |
Sheet sizes
Sheet sizes, and 10mm or 13mm
Standard sheets are 1200mm wide, in lengths from 2400mm up to 6000mm, and in 10, 13 and 16mm thicknesses, with 6.5mm for curves. The length is a real decision, not a default: a 4800mm sheet on a ceiling halves the number of butt joints a 2400mm sheet leaves, which is less setting, less sanding and fewer joints to crack. It also needs to fit through the door and up the stairs, so the site access goes on the enquiry.
10mm is the standard wall sheet and the usual ceiling board on residential centres. 13mm is specified where the wall is tall, the stud spacing is wide, or the sheet is part of a fire, acoustic or impact system that was tested at 13mm. 16mm turns up in fire and acoustic systems and heavy commercial walls. Thicker sheets change the screw length and the compound quantity, so the thickness decides the rest of the order.
Fire rated plasterboard
Fire-rated plasterboard is a system, not a sheet
The National Construction Code requires fire separation between dwellings that share a wall in units and townhouses, along corridors and between sole-occupancy units in apartment buildings, and in some garage-to-house situations, which the certifier decides for the building. The number the certifier wants is a Fire Resistance Level, written as three figures in minutes, such as 60/60/60: structural adequacy, integrity and insulation.
The part that catches people out is that the FRL belongs to the tested system. A fire-rated sheet on the wrong stud, with the wrong insulation or the wrong screw pattern, does not carry the rating. So a fire wall is ordered as a package: the sheet, the framing, the mineral wool insulation and the fixings that were tested together, with the manufacturer's system sheet to hand to the certifier. Tell us the FRL on the schedule and that is what arrives.
Stud and track, furring and ceilings
Metal stud and track, sized to the wall
Five Perth plasterboard sites list "steel framing" and none of them explain it. The section, the gauge and the centres are what decide whether a partition stays straight.
| Stud section | Where it is used |
|---|---|
| 51mm | Non-loadbearing partitions in tight spaces, wardrobes, bulkheads. |
| 64mm | The standard internal partition stud for offices and residential fit-outs. |
| 76mm | Taller partitions and walls carrying more services. |
| 92mm | Where a 90mm timber stud would have gone. Room for insulation and plumbing. |
| 150mm | Full-height commercial walls, plant rooms, heavy services. |
Studs run at 450 or 600mm centres in three common gauges, from light-gauge for low partitions to heavier sections for tall walls, and sit in a floor track and a ceiling track. Where the slab above will move, the head track becomes a deflection head with a gap the sheet does not bridge. Wall height, stud spacing, gauge and what the wall carries, plumbing, a TV, a basin, all move the section up or down, so the enquiry carries the heights and we size the frame.
Ceilings get their own framing: furring channel on clips or direct-fix brackets under joists and concrete, ceiling battens under timber, or a suspended grid with hangers and tiles for commercial ceilings that need access above. Whichever it is, it goes on the same order as the sheets, with the clips, hangers and screws to suit.
Cornice Perth
Cornice by profile and lineal metre
Cornice is ordered by the lineal metre, by profile and by size. Cove is the plain curve in most Perth homes, in 55, 75 and 90mm; stepped and decorative profiles suit period work and feature rooms, and square-set (no cornice at all, a shadow line instead) is the contemporary alternative that changes the sheeting detail. On a renovation the job is matching the existing profile, so a short offcut in a photo is worth more than a description. Cornice cement, mitre lengths and the waste for the corners go on the order with it.
Insulation Perth
Thermal, acoustic and fire insulation, by what it has to do
Insulation goes into the wall before the second side is sheeted and into the ceiling before the board goes up, which is why it belongs on the plasterboard order and not on a separate one that arrives a week later.
- Thermal: ceiling and external wall batts to the R-value the energy report calls for in Perth's climate zone. Batt width must match the stud or joist spacing, 430mm for 450 centres and 580mm for 600, or it will not fit without cutting.
- Acoustic: denser batts in party walls, bathroom walls, home theatres and between floors, working with the acoustic sheet and the stud to lift the wall's sound rating.
- Fire: mineral wool in the cavity of a fire-rated system, as part of the tested package with the sheet and the frame.
Residential and commercial grades, and the reflective foils and sarking that go with them, are on the same list.
What to order with the sheets
A fit-out order is never just the board
Nobody in Perth writes this list down, and it is the reason a plasterer stands on site waiting for the one thing that was not ordered. Every fit-out goes out of here as one list:
- Plasterboard sheets by type, thickness and length, with the waste allowance for the room layout
- Stud and track, or timber framing, sized to the wall height and the services it carries
- Furring channel, ceiling battens or a suspended grid for the ceilings, with clips and hangers
- Screws by length for the sheet thickness and the frame (timber or steel)
- Jointing tape, base coat and topping compound, quantities to the sheet area
- External corner bead, control joints where the run calls for them, access panels for services
- Cornice by profile and lineal metre, with cornice cement
- Thermal, acoustic and fire insulation, batt width matched to the stud spacing
Send the wall and ceiling areas by room, the wall heights and which rooms are wet, fire or sound rated, and the whole list comes back as one price.
Delivered to site
No yard. The board comes to the slab.
Every plasterboard supplier in Perth sells its yard. Integrity does not have one, and the fit-out is better for it: the sheets, the framing and the insulation are delivered to site across Perth and staged to the programme, floor by floor or stage by stage, so board is not stacked on a slab for a fortnight soaking up the weather. Tell us the site access, whether the sheets need to go up a level, and when the plasterer starts, and the delivery is booked around that.
The same account carries the rest of the build. The doors, jambs and door hardware, the skirting, architraves and framing timber, and the plasterboard for the same rooms can land in the same week from the same supplier, which is one less phone call on every stage.
How it works
How to order plasterboard for a build or fit-out
Three steps, one point of contact from the first email to the truck.
- 01
Send the sheet count or the wall and ceiling areas
Room by room is ideal: wall area, ceiling area, wall height, which rooms are wet, which walls are fire or sound rated, and stud spacing. If you are still choosing board types, tell us the building class and we suggest the sheet for each room.
- 02
One price for the whole wall and ceiling package
Sheets, framing, ceiling system, screws, compound, tape, cornice and insulation on one list, priced as one order by one person. Nothing to reconcile between a board quote and a framing quote.
- 03
Delivered to site, staged to the programme

Straight answers
Plasterboard in Perth, the questions we get asked
If yours is not here, send it through and you will get an answer from the person who prices the orders.
Is there a difference between plasterboard and Gyprock?
Gyprock is a brand name for one manufacturer's plasterboard, the way Esky is a brand of cooler. Plasterboard is the product: a gypsum core between paper liners, made by several manufacturers in Australia. We supply plasterboard from the trade brands your spec calls for, so the sheet on the order matches the sheet the certifier and the plasterer expect.
Is 13mm plasterboard better than 10mm?
It is stiffer and heavier, not better. 10mm is the standard wall sheet and the usual ceiling board. 13mm is specified where the wall is tall, the stud spacing is wide, the spec calls for it, or the sheet is part of a fire or acoustic system that was tested at 13mm. Put the wall heights and stud centres on the enquiry and we match the thickness to them.
What is the best thickness of plasterboard for walls?
For most residential walls on studs at 450 or 600mm centres, 10mm. For commercial partitions, taller walls, and any fire, acoustic or impact wall, the thickness is set by the tested system, usually 13mm, sometimes 16mm. The system decides, not the room.
What is plasterboard called in Australia?
Plasterboard, and in the trade often by a brand name. Drywall is the American term and gib board is the New Zealand one. If a spec says Gyprock, it means plasterboard of that brand and the equivalent sheet from another manufacturer usually satisfies the same system, but check the fire and acoustic test reports before substituting.
What does an FRL like 60/60/60 mean?
A Fire Resistance Level is three numbers, in minutes: structural adequacy, integrity and insulation. 60/60/60 means the wall held up, kept flames and hot gases out, and kept the far face cool for 60 minutes in the test. The rating belongs to the whole tested system, board plus frame plus insulation plus fixing pattern, which is why the fire-rated wall is ordered as a package, not as a sheet.
Which plasterboard goes in a bathroom?
A wet area sheet, which has a water-resistant core and liners, on the walls and ceiling of bathrooms, laundries and the splash zones of kitchens. Where the wall will be tiled, the spec often changes to fibre cement sheet behind the tiles. Tell us which walls are tiled and the order carries both.
Which steel stud do I need for a 3 metre wall?
It depends on the stud section, the gauge and the spacing, and on what the wall carries. As a rule the taller the wall and the wider the centres, the deeper the section, so a 3 metre partition that would be fine in 64mm at 450 centres may need 76 or 92mm at 600. Send the wall heights and we size the stud, the track and the deflection head to suit.
What do I need to order with the plasterboard sheets?
The frame or furring, the screws for the sheet and frame, jointing tape, base and topping compound, corner bead, cornice and cornice cement, and the insulation to go in the wall before the second side is sheeted. The list above on this page is what a fit-out actually needs. Send the areas and it all comes back on one order.
Do you deliver plasterboard to site in Perth?
Yes, that is the whole offer. There is no yard to visit. Sheets, framing and insulation are delivered to site across Perth, staged to the programme, so the plasterer is not working around pallets that arrived a fortnight early. Tell us the site access and whether the sheets need to go up a level, and the delivery is booked to suit.
Can I put the doors and timber on the same order?
Yes. Integrity supplies the whole build from one account: plasterboard and framing, doors and door hardware, timber, LVLs and mouldings, cladding and decking. The door jambs, the skirting and the sheets for the same rooms can land on site in the same week from the same supplier.
Got a fit-out to price?
Send the areas by room, or call 0407 380 788. Sheets, framing, cornice and insulation come back as one price from one person.
